Dear Parents
You did not probaly think two years ago when we left the army of the potomac that you would get a letter from me dated from the banks of the potomac we have marched over 8000 miles since we joined the Western army I am proud of the name which the army of the potomac give us (Shermans band of thieves) had it not been for us Richmond would still have been in the hands of the rebs we left /

Raleigh April 30th arived at Richmond May 8th May 10th we again took up our line of march passing over the Spotsylvania battle ground where Genl Hancock fought so hard the bones of several hundred of our men lay buried around on the ground skulls were evry where to be seen also the old Chanclerville ground we buried some that belonged to our regiment that were killed two years ago we arrived here at 12M yesterday the grand and to citizens imposing review takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday / the 23rd and 24th soon the troops will be on their way home I hope by the middle of June had any one told me six months ago that we should see such a change in our government I should never have believed them I am glad to hear of the capture of Jeff I guess that glass eye of his led him astray I am pretty hard up for money but I hardly know what to say about sending me any I guess you can send me five dollars by the first mail that leaves after you get this I will close with my regards to all
