George S. Palmer to Elliot Palmer and Florilla S. Palmer, 20 May 1864
[note in another hand] Geo May 20, 1864

...at the time of an engagement I hope Loomis is safe and sound only one of our Company was wounded in the great battle at Dalton Georgia and not any in the battle of Cassville this one of the finest towns that I have seen for a great while on entering the place we Co D patroled the street entering houses finding tables set meat cooked and plenty of every thing to eat such as flour ham and I found quite a quantity of loaf sugar which Penfield and I have taken care of this morn I had liver pancakes molasses and coffee good enough for any one but we were hungry having not had hardly four hours sleep at a time for the past four / weeks my feet are blisterd and feel almost worn out so do all the boys but success has been on our side so far and I trust that it always will be on our side but dont be carried away with the idea that the south are starved for I find that they have as much as we do at home and plenty of it I was surprised to find it so but so it is I will only add that we are fifty five miles from Atlanta and hoping that I may be spared through the terrible strife of war and meet the whole family at the old homestead I am as ever
