Tantallon Tenn March 28th

Dear Parents
Your welcome letter I have just recd and as I have a few leisure moments I hasten to answer it we are still here on Friday orders came for us to march as soon as relieved but the 137th N.Y. have not come yet and I hardly think they will this week One year ago to day I received a furlough to go home but in looking back it seems as if it was hardly a year but since our arrival here in the Army of the West we have lost six by death in D Company our Company with 101 men left New Haven 20 months ago and six new recruits added to since last summer has / forty five men now the rest are either killed wounded or sick if you go to Gilead give my love all and tell aunt Cynthias girls that Frank Taylor sends his respects and wishes to have them write I must say that my relations are the poorest correspondents I have never mind I wont write to them till they do to me the Gurrilles are getting rather troublesome of late they were ten of them prowling around our camp friday night Co. A. left here a week ago to day and we are the only Company here a small force could come in and gobble us before we had time to say Jack Robinson the weather is verry pleasant and the trees are beginning to / leaf out the old citizens (all of them are Reb, but of course call themselves union while we are here) hate to have us leave here some of the boys are marrying the Tenn girls five of our regiment have married whether for better or worse is more than I can say one of the boys is from Hartford he has a wife at home but if they can love a tobaco chewing, smoking lip snuff enough to marry them they can do more than I can Ed Black was in here last night the boys are all well give love to all write soon
