Dear Parents
I have just recd your verry welcome letter knowing that you are anxious to hear from me I think that my arm is out of danger now it is not as painful and there is not near the heat in it that that there was you may know how anxious the ward doctor was when he brought the head doctor with two others to examine it and see what was best to put on it they orderd some thing to keep it from spreading above my shoulder and a wet cloth to be changed evry fifteen minutes (it was kept wet in sugar of lead) so you see that the nurse had some thing to do the boys have not all come back yet three from the 20th and one or two from the 5th have not / back yet I recd three papers and three letters in this mail one paper and letter was from Frank he was well he writes that you seem to think that I did not stay at home any of the time I feel myself as if I did not stay at home as much as I ought to but never mind one I am sorry and that is that ever I took my furlough on more than one account and so are the rest when we went home we expected to find that we should see the North more loyal than it is but it is verry different the boys feel as if their friends had gone back on them and they have no heart to help put this damnable Rebellion down and the expense is so great and also it seemed harder to leave this time than before these three good reasons that we find no more 20 day furloughs for me when I get an honorable discharge then will I be willing to come home unless / some thing unforeseen turns up such as sickness at home which I hope may not occur there are two verry sick boys in our ward they were both well when I left for home and acting as nurses if they live 24 hours they may get along we have very rainy weather most of the time some two or three thousand of Joe Hookers sick came up to the city the other day a good many died on being transferd from the boat to the different hospitals the army has not moved yet and may not till the first of may from what we hear how are all Cromwell people Give my regards to all tell Loomis to write to me I see old Priest Osborn on my way through Newark his son was going on in the train said he see father while he was on sent his love and now I close in haste your Affect son
