Washington Sept 17th

Dear Parents
your welcome letter and Brother Loomis was recd at the same time he was well I hope that he will live to see the end of this cruel war I am verry well suited where I am and if I can regain my health I think I should prefer staying here to any other place one thing that makes me more so is a young lady whose mother has spent a fortune to care for the poor soldier is my best friend I believe I have never spoken of this before she is rich and one of the handsomest young ladies I have amost ever seen while I was sick she and Mother (as I was going to call her) come and brought in deliveries for me but I never thought I should enjoy Washington as well as I have and should I ever be so lucky a one to get out of the service I hardly think I could / leave the city I am treated as one of the family whenever I go there but her relations are all secesh to the back bone perhaps you never visited a secesh house probaly there are Copperheads in Cromwell but I have been in regular secesh company (I hope you wont take my meaning their folks to be secesh) for they are not the first thing was a grand party at her uncles I went and was introduced to the old man he said I see you are in the Yankee army yes sir he said I am sorry to see so many fine young men sent from the north to be butcherd for the C.S.A. market I thanked him and we left rather earlier than they wanted to have us but I will change the subject and hope you wont mention it to any one if you please there is no news of any importance there is a / report that they are fighting at Warrenton also that Genl Gillmore has resigned I will send my paper that I was going to present to Dr Simon of our ward it may be rather interesting to you have you you recd the picture of Campbell Hospital and have you drawn the pay on that order yet Give my regards to all friends and I will close with love and friendship for all friends to the union and old Constitution good night

in much haste your affect
Son Geo S Palmer
