Dear Brother
I will write you a few lines in answer to your welcome letter which I have just recd what to say of my health I hardly know but I think I some better than I have been I sent a few lines to you by a young man who has got his discharge he left yesterday he has lived in Pittsburgh and knows a verry handsome Lady in Cousin Wm office by sight he has spoken of her two or three times you must look out and not let him be a rival I wish it was so that you could be in Washington but after today the Congress adjourns and Washington will be quiet my likeness was a verry good one it was taken on a steel plate same the one I had taken for Loomis in Middletown last spring Frank I would advise you as a brother never to think of enlisting in this or any other war those that come
last sabbath I had a visit from first Lieut now acting Capt in place of Capt Parker resigned he came the day before right from the regiment said Jerry and Penfield were tough as knots the boys are all pretty well. Owen Chapman of portland he made the coffin of Henry Geer and Charles W Brooks an old tent mate of mine have both died out of our Company since I left them they were both well when I left them at Fairfax Station our regiment is at present at Stafford Court House ten miles this side of Fredricksburg I have not heard from home for a week then father was at work on his broom corn Mother was about as usual I wrote a few lines to Loomis but as yet have got no answer hoping to hear from you immediately I must draw to a close by bidding you / good bye till my next

Jim Conniff nor have any others come back I would advise them to go to Canada as evry deserter is to be hung after the first of April
