Dear Brother
                        Your welcome letter came in the mornings mail and although I have but a few minutes to spare I will improve them by writing to you it is sad to look up through our ward and see the poor soldiers that have just come in we have our hospital full of them there is one of the 20 Conn Vols he says that the loss of life is awful in our Regiment the killed are Capt Woodruff of Co E First Lieut Cadwell Co D Wounded are Col Ross Lieut Col Wooster is wounded and a prisoner Capt Dilerman Co I Capt Pardee Adjutant Burbank the privates I have not found out who was killed and wounded yet but the loss of life is fearful there is of the first LI here he is not in / Loomis but says that he knows him also that Loomis was safe on Sunday let us hope that he is safe I trust that he is a great many God forsaken looking prisoners have come in to our city during the last few days I have not heard from home in some time but expect one in the morning the city is full of rumors of the defeat of the army but I cant believe them yet but it may be so if the army is defeated let us us give up all hopes of having an able general for the army of the of the potomac I read a letter from you stating you had lost my picture I am glad for your sake that you found it your stamps I am verry much obliged to you for sending I must close / in order to help dress the wounds of the poor boy in great haste I bid you good evng till my next Write soon
