Dear Brother                                      
your letter of the 20th has just been handed to me by the boys it came last night but I was on picket and could not come back untill to day you better believe I was glad to hear from you when I wrote to you I had a letter from Loomis after I sealed yours and I would have told you of it but the letter was seald and stamped so I thought I would let her rip I have written to you as soon as I recd yours I dont see why they are so long coming Loomis was well when he wrote it is about time I got an answer from him I recd a letter from home the other day but I suppose that you have heard from home as late as I have we have built some log huts and are living in them also have a stove we have bought paid $4.75 for it ten are living in it C. A. Lyman C. W. Wilcox / James Conniff Jerry and Charlie Hubbard John Brainard S. H. Spencer F T Bailey C T Penfield Geo R Palmer and Company seven are Cromwell three are Haddam boys we expect to stay here for awhile but cant tell we may be shifted around at any time we have not been paid off yet we have had a rough time of it two of our men have died Wm Foster died the other day he was sent home Philip Helenthall died some time ago I think your correspondence is considerable I have to write all the spare time I have which is precious little or not have something to do evry day old Sage must be an old devil all the boys are about as usual the 20th is cracked up as the best regiment in the service any way we have made the best and quietest marches of any in the service we have expected a brush with the enemy for the last four weeks but as yet but two have been shot and those were / pickets I am sorry you are sick I have been almost sick for the last four weeks have you heard from the Newark boys Tom Cutler is no more you say I am sorry of it who did you see there I hope tell Mr Sumner that soldier life is first rate as we live now Remember me to him and his wife take good care of yourself and you will oblige your
