Dear Brother
Having just returned from Nashville where I have been with some prisoners I found two letters one from you and one from home both of them were quite welcome father and mother were well when they wrote they wrote that Rhoda was married Lura poor thing ought to get spliced before it is too late we are having pretty good times here doing Provost Duty also guarding trains on the Memphis R.R. there are thousands of acres of cotton remain unpicked around here on account of the niggers running off Edwin Black was in here a little while ago he is well and sends his regards to his cousins I have / not heard from Frank in some time I wish he was more punctual in his correspondence I wrote an answer to Billy Adams which I presume he as got by this time it was verry cold here last night the ground froze hard we havent had any snow yet old farmers say that there is hardly any snow in this part of the country they never see a sleigh down in this country now Loomis dont let your angry passions rise for we have to submit to our superior officers whether we like them or not the time will soon come when you will be on an equal with with any of them remember that our parents would feel bad to hear that we had got into trouble with any of our officers we have some piss pots for officers but I can get along with them better by doing about right we are going to a / ball to night of course the Provost guard will go come Loomis wont you be here to night I will now draw to a close hoping this will find you as it leaves me in good health hoping we may meet around the fireside of our parents so good bye
