Washington June 15th 1863
 
Dear Brother
                                    your welcome letter of the 12th has just been recd and with pleasure I hasten to answer it hoping it will find you enjoying good health over ten thousand sick soldiers have been admitted into the different hospitals since friday in the city six hundred of them are in our hospital they are not verry sick as a general thing Joe Hooker is coming towards Washington and the rebels are following him there is a prospect of their having a fight on the old bull run battle field and I fear the consequences but hope for the best I think if they would let them get as far as Penn. they would get what paddy / give the drum but Dear brother we will hope for the best come what will I trust we shall have peace on some terms before long for I do hope that the killing of men is nearly through with the Army will in a short time be thinned clear out the nine months men from New Jersey are going home the 30 and 31st have gone to day the 24, 26 and 28 went Saturday the 22 and 27 Conn go home this week so you see how it will be some time before we are where we were three months ago I acknowledge the receipt of two dollars there is not $5.00 coming to me if you have kept an acct of the postage stamps I am much obliged to you Dear brother and shall ever remember your kindness to your brothers in the army and now I will close by wishing to hear from you soon yours in great haste
