Dear Brother
I have just recd a letter from home stating that you wished to hear from me and indeed I think it is about time that we should hear from one or the other we have had rather a tough campaign of it so far but you probaly know how for the Army of the Cumberland have advanced we are now only six miles from Atlanta in line of battle the enemy have strong fortifications in front of us and whether we shall be able to capture the city is more than I can say Marietta is a verry pretty city about the size of Middletown we done duty there one week our Colonel is there yet in command of the post we miss him a good / deal and hope he will come back to us I am sorry to hear of your illness hope you will try to visit home this fall and rejoin your health we have just one year longer to stay in the service who will live to see the year up is more than we can tell but we must hope for the best I have not been paid since the first of January of course we will have quite a pile coming to us I hope to hear from you before long and if you can I wish you would send me some stamps hoping that we may all live to meet around the family circle I will close with love
