Dear Parents
I have just got your letter am sorry to hear that Fs has left you but tell Father to hire some boy or get one of the cousins to stay all winter for it is to hard to do all the work in my last I wrote a hasty note to you but you have heard by this time the rebels came verry us we are still in the camp that we were at when I last wrote dont know how long we shall be here this morning firing was heard near harpers ferry what it is we have not heard the boys are well Charles Hubbard we hear is bayoneted so the Cromwell people say it is the first I have heard as he rooms with me for we board at the Astor house our tents are rubber blankets we lay on the cold damp ground with nothing over us but a blanket about quarter the size of my shawl my cartrige / box for a pillow you may judge how nice it is our style of living is about the same it is a little better than it was though not as good as I wish it was although I dont grumble as much as I might or as some of the boys do it rains verry hard as you can see by the paper for evry little while a drop comes down on us and my paper gets one as you can see by my skipping I have not seen Loomis and do not know as I can for I cant get a pass nor have I heard from him but once I have a paper evry week from Hartford also a letter so that I get the news you must be lonesome I think but never mind you aint where the bull dogs (the cannon) bark as loud as they do here I was on picket night before last. Jim Conniff is on picket to night in the rain Jerry is asleep the back of my chair is Charles Penfield knees Charlie Hubbard is writing / Ed Black is half asleep Ed stops with the Drum Corps James Conniff Charlie and Jerry Hubard C Penfield and George Palmer huddle up together so you see Cromwell boys keep together pretty well tell Pa he had better get the crops in as fast as he can how is little bossie and the old horse and cows getting along I wonder if piggie dont dont have a better bed than I do (another big drop of rain) how is the big pig does he yet live does Sage trouble you and the pump man how is he how is Cromwell people and all if three cents worth can answer all these questions you can afford to pay the postage Remember me to all the people worth speaking to oh those lines a young in Hartford sent me to send to you I did so but am sorry as I will bet you cried at reading them. the boys all send their respects and thank you for sending yours tell Frank to write so that / I will know where to write I have not heard from the box
