Camp Chase Sept 17th
Dear Father
you see that we have moved we are camped where Loomis was all winter we made a forced march of 10 ten miles from capitol hill we had forty rounds of cartridges we stood it for about six miles without halting we stoped about half an hour and then marched to the camp I had one hundred pounds on my back I stood it as well as any one we are camped on the Rebel Gen Lee farm in sight of falls Church on the road to bull run we have the pleasure of being the Color Company the Col told us that we were the best company / the ground it is verry warm here we are in sight of the Rebels some of them came into our camp the other day in washington one was taken in the camp of the 15th Conn in the garb of a woman selling lemonade we are not quite so long making soldier men as they were last winter if reports are true a week will not roll around before we shall see some sport I am not sorry that I have enlisted yet how do you get along with farming has mother put my money in the bank yet Capt Hubbard and Fred Hubbard were here last night they look first rate there is over two hundred and fifty thousand men in camp around us it a grand sight to see them / all lit up in the night I cant find head nor tail of the 1st LI have you heard from Loomis yet I will send a bank bill to you to keep for me for a curiosity have you seen the ten five and fifty cent shinplaster had some the other day if you have not I will send you one if you will let me know if I am short tell mother she may have the money but the ball is not moulded for me yet write soon from your son
