Atlanta Nov 5th 1864

Dear Parents
Your long looked for letter came at last and I can assure you that I was glad to hear from home the gallant Army of the South West is again on the move, where is the mystery for you to find out it will probaly go from here towards Mobile I have been detailed at Corps Head Quarters for the last four weeks to guard Corps cattle our division moved yesterday out on the McDonough Road and the rest of the Star Corps are following I dont think I shall join my regiment on the march as Captain Bickford said he should keep me with the Head Quarters Commissary stores Atlanta is to be evacuated already they are making preparations to blow up the city I am sorry that we have to leave but Genl Hood has changed his front / and as a matter of course we shall have to change accordingly I sent seventy five dollars to you or to the Rev Mr Dennisson to be paid to you he lives in Portland our Company all sent their money to him to be sent to their homes and from there put into the bank how much have I got saved up have you ever recd the pictures of Tantallon and Stevenson I have paid for them to be sent to you to have framed also the picture of Atlanta you have never mentioned of having recd them I have heard of Loomis promotion as Commissary Sergeant (we dont have Hospital Sergeants in the army) it is the best berth in the regiment and I am glad Ls has got it Frank has forgotten that he has a brother in the army of the West I have not heard from him in a good while long time I hear that Conniff has sold his place also / that the Baldwin girls were in Newark lately and so on and so forth people in Cromwell seem to take quite an interest in our affairs by sending us McLellen tickets but we have had our election and poor Mac didnt get a vote from Co. D. and but a verry few in the regiment Horace T Robison is with me from my Company I am sorry that you are in such a fix for the winter is close at hand but the first of August will soon come then the 20th will be at home and I hope we shall all be able to meet our parents around the family homestead if you purchase in Stafford dont go up on the hill but I would buy down on the Springs Road. I think on the whole it would be rather expensive living in Newark this winter I will now close with regards to all
