Acworth July 6th 1864
Dear Parents
Your welcome letter I have just recd and I hasten to answer it hoping that it will find you enjoying good health I am at present in the US Military Telegraph Office on duty having been detailed for this place while our Regiment stays in this place we had orders to evacuate this place last friday evng and fall back to Altoona Gap but the next day it was countermanded and Sunday July 3rd our forces got Marietta and to day the first train will run into that city the rebels are not across the Chattahoochee River as many suppose the river is only ten miles from Atlanta our right is swung around to the banks of that river while the left is rather weak so as to let the Johnnys come partly around us or retreat as he sees fit the latter will be their choice I think for an army ought to keep near its base of supplies about a thousand rebels went north as prisoners of war they will / spend the summer north at fort Johnson as that is a favorite resort for Southerners three of Co K boys were gobbled up by rebs while out black berring and have not been heard from since Robert is well and all the rest of the Cromwell boys I had beans and squashes for supper last evng and oysters for dinner to day a slight difference from soldiers living we shall probaly have here in a day or two for Marietta as the front as the base of supplies is to be moved to day I am anxious to hear from Loomis Frank dont seem to care about writing to his brothers love to all as I must close for want of time to get to the P.O. write soon I got the money all right Your Affect Son
