Dear Parents
Yours of the 18th I have just recd and I hasten to give it an answer I have just come off duty having been on camp guard yesterday we had a division review on the rebels parade ground it was one of the finest reviews that ever I saw Genl Slocum reviewed us and when the 20th CV came along he said it was the best Rgmt he ever saw for neatness and drill our Lieut Col commands the brigade only think of a brigade of six Regmts and not a Colonel to any of them a Col also commands the Division the day was fine / and it seemed like a holiday as we marched through the street. on our march to the parade ground Ed Black came to me with the sad news of his fathers death he died at Nashville Tennessee we have the news of Charley G Wilcox death of our Company he was wounded on the skirmish line the last of August H G Salisbury my old tent mate was taken prisoner we heard from him the other day he was at Charleston, S.C. we are glad to hear of the victories in Virginia I see that the 6th Corps were in the fight how long the rebels can stand it to be whipped evry where I hope Loomis is safe I have not heard from for some time I am sorry to learn of your large debt I think Sage has tried / to skin out evry thing from you he could the Cromwell boys are nearly all played out Smith Winkle Penfield and Palmer are all there is left for duty I will now close hoping to hear from you soon I am
