Dear Parents
I have just recd your welcome letter and hasten to answer it we are still here but are to leave at day light to morrow we are to fall back on the Nashville and Chattanooga Rail Road we have to leave good quarters and it seems too bad for us to have to leave here it has been verry cold during the past week we have not had any snow yet but it has been cold enough to snow five companies have left of our Regiment nearly a week ago Robert Alisson and Arthur Boardman have gone the other five Companies leave in the morning I am sorry to hear that Father is so pinched with the cold does / he wear all the clothes he can find his son was detailed to take some deserters to Scottsboro twenty miles from here so I mounted the top of some old freight cars with the cold west wind blowing I tell you it was a cold trip and I thought that it would be quite pleasant to drop in and warm myself at home but as I have one year and a half longer to serve my country till then I shall not allow myself to dwell on home and its surroundings you know it is always best to have your mind on the work we have before us Zenus Platt was buried yesterday he belongs to our Company making the sixth death in the Regiment since we came here you have probaly received the letter / that I wrote the other day we expect to go to Tennytown twenty miles from here now hoping to hear from you soon I will close with regards to all
From your Affectionate
Son George H Palmer
