Dear Parents
I received your letter on monday last and was exceedingly glad to hear from you and to hear that you was well I am well at present and I hope that these few lines may find you the same you must excuse me for not writing sooner for we have been under marching orders for the last 4 or 5 days and I wanted to see what we was agoing to do before I wrote to you / but now the orders are countermand so I will write they called us up last sunday morning about 3 oclock and ordered us to pack our knapsacks and be ready to march immediately and they kept us in suspense for three days and then after that they routed us up in the night and had us to strike our tents and after we had got them all down and rolled up ready to start the order was countermanded we understood then that richmond was taken and the Col drawed us out in line and gave three hearty cheers but it has not been confirmed yet as I have heard of if it is the heart of Rebeldom is broken up / and also I think that it will create a start towards peace but I want to have a little scratch with them before this war closes we have started two or three times where they was fighting but before we could get there they vanished there is a great many Rebels here and they are bringing them in every day but the most of them are as still as mice but some of them are quite saucy and you know it is very [paper hole] to have them [paper hole] us so but but they are prisoners and we have to put up with it the best we can but I hope that it will not be long that we will have to take their slang

Well you must excuse this short letter for I am cook to day and I have no [paper hole] to write I do despise this cooking arrangement for we have to cook stand guard drill all at the same time

Write soon

Yours truly
From J Lanterman
