Loomis T. Palmer to Brother, 9 July 1863
Camp near Boonesboro Md
July 9th 1863.
Dear Brother.
We have met the enemy at Gettysburgh & have whipped him terribly. how much you must have heard of the doings of the 1st Brigade 3d Devision 6th Corps I refer you to the Philadelphia Enquirer of the 8th & 9th. terrible has been the slaughter. Lee is now in full retreat, we have been here & there, marching day & night. have done all we could to have him meet the victorious Army of the Potomac but without success we will push him where ever he is to be found
Am now in battle field of yesterday although a cavalry fight still it was a hard fought battle we captured 3 cannon from the enemy. am as well as could be expected, for we the 6th Corps have done unheard of marching on the 2d of July we made 41 m. arrived on battle field in time to hurl the rebel hordes back for they were steadily driving the 11th & first Corps 3d were in thickest of the fight.
In great haste I must close write oftner for your letters are recd with pleasure
