Loomis T. Palmer to Francis K. Palmer, 18 September 1863
Camp on Stone House Mt
near Rapidan river, Va
Sept 18th 1863

Dear Brother
Your package was received this A.M. & need I tell you was thankfully received? I thank you dear Brother for your interest in me & for the many favors you have done me & hope some time I can repay you. The paper was a little soiled, by the late rains, otherwise things were perfect. With your package came a letter from home Parents were as well as could be expected Mother thought I had ought to get a furlough, she little knows the trouble & thinks one has to only ask for one & he gets it. not so, a furlough is given by the Capt of Co. next approved by the Col of Regt, approved by the / Brigade commander then the Division comd & lastly by the Corps Gen. so you see if one passes the Col. it is almost shure to be disapproved by some higher in rank, & there is little chance if I get one before we go into camp for winter.

We left Warrenton on the 15th & arrived on this mt yesterday it is a dreary place. there is thought to be at least three thousand deserters from the Rebels army in these Mts, and they are coming in by droves No news from the front to day. What we shall do the coming week, time can only tell. in closing let me again thank you for your favors, and as ever remaining

Your Afft Brother,
Loomis
