Dear Brother,
Days have passed since I have recd a favor from my absent brother. Why is it? Surely he has not forgotten his absent bro. No, I hope not, for I long to receive his kind favors and I know that mine are equally recd with joy & pleasure.
As you will perceive by the commencement of this we have resumed the offensive & pushed Early down or up the valley to this place, where we found him posted in a gap, which would be impossible to take, without the loss of many thousand & are now resting near / this place. I have written to you twice since I have recd a letter. come now do write me a good long letter, telling me all of your affairs &c. how you are getting along, your future intention, & in my next I shall be able to inform you of my promotion to____ of Regt a post, far better than Lieut. except that one is minus the bars. the 65th N.Y. Vols. go home on the 29th of Aug. when the 65th & 67th are to be consolidated & Col Hamlin has appointed me to this place, by recommendation of Capt H. C. Fiske. I am to have my choice after that date, either the position of Orderly Sargt of Commissary Sargt of Regt the latter is / a post of responsibility, the former pays $24 pr month the latter $22. I am halting between the two. Capt says that I had better take Orderly as I will obtain a commission sooner than Com Sargt but I do not know which you will hear from me before the 1st Sept so that I can inform you in my next perhaps. hoping to hear from you soon I will close by wishing my Dear Brother heavens choicest blessing
ever your true & fond
Brother Loomis /
do not put the position
