Washington July 8th
Dear Brother
Your welcome letter has just been recd and I hasten to answer it also to thank your for the Carte Deviste of Loomis it looks some as he use to but the chin and eye brows look black I recd a letter from home father and mother were well we are all excitement on account of the fall of Vicksburg and also Lee splendid army have fallen into our hands and last night a large crowd assembled in front of the Presidents to call him out on account of the fall of Vicksburg now 1 P.M. the cannon from a hundred forts around Washington are roaring and a barking on account of the / whole army the war is of short duration I think that by New Years we shall be home it is the brightest day of the whole war if it does rain but many have fallen but I hope Loomis is safe I have seen a list of the killed and wounded in the 6th Corps dont see Loomis name among them and hope it is not I am glad you have concluded not to go for I dont think you are called on to go you have two brothers in this war and that is enough our Corps is spoken verry highly of by all the papers I shall have to draw to a close write soon
