George S. Palmer to Elliot Palmer and Florilla S. Palmer, 10 August 1864
Aug 10th 64 in the breast works

in front of Atlanta
Dear Parents               your letter of the 29th has just been recd and I hasten to give it a speedy answer the shells are flying all around us and we have to hug the ground the enemys and our breast works are in plain sight of each other picket firing is the order of the day as well as night I might go on and write a good deal but as my time is limited I shall have to write a short letter I recd a letter from Frank he was well I hope Loomis will remain in Washington the rest of the campaign they have met with disaster in front of Petersburgh there is a report that Robert is dead but I hope that you will not inform Mr Allissons people till it is confirmed the Cromwell / boys are about as usual Penfield recd a letter from Jerry Hubbard he was doing duty at Murfreesboro Tenn I wish they would send him to the regiment for our duty is quite heavy and the regiment is small we want evry man that is able to do duty the rebs are strongly fortified in front of us Gus Root of Portland almost dirtied in his breeches when he heard of the draft and offers $500. to any one that will come I hope he will have to come and evry one like him that has preached and asked for this war when I saw Gus last he was coming I tell you there is not much patriotism in the Army it is a duty that we look at if our friends when the soil of Md and Penn is invaded will stand by what shall we do who have been out two years and whose business it has been to / take what you can get we are on half rations and of course we feel like grumbling we have had a tough campaign of it and I hope the time will come when guns big and little will be thrown away for I am sick of hearing this constant firing some one is killed or wounded in the brigade nearly evry day how long it will be before the Jonnies leave is more than I can say I will now draw to a close I am obliged to you for stamps and money send more of the same sort Give my respects to enquiring friends and write soon
