Head Quarters Left Wing Army of Georgia
City of Savanah Jan 8th 1865
Dear Parents
Having a few spare moments to myself I will devote them to writing a few lines on rebel paper and ink the citizens have again opened their stores and ask rebel prices for evry thing apples four for a dollar and evry thing else in proportion the city was full of evrything one fort had seventy two guns in it and you will meet forts at evry turn fifteen locomotives besides stationary engines machinery cars besides cotton enough to defray the expenses of the campaign the city is about the size of Hartford on verry low ground on the river of the same name for down the river is the fort Jackson and fort Boggs is on the point at the south of the city the people are quite secesh and dont ask or expect much favor from the mudsills there are twelve churches two of them are Presbyterian and four more are for the people of color making 16 in all I went to the presbyterian church (Independent) corner Bull and Broad St last sabath heard Rev Dr Anson preach in looking over the congregation I saw Genl Sherman he sat with his arms folded most of the time and like Father was guilty of nodding once or twice during service
Genl Green and Pulaski monuments are in the parks the latter represents him falling from his horse in the siege of the city 1778 I was detailed one month before I left Atlanta at Corps headquarters of the Comissary Department and have been there ever since and the regiment is seven miles from here on the South Carolina side of the river so that I am botherd a good deal about my mails if I was certain how long I should stay here I would have you direct to me at the commissaries but I think it would be safer to direct as before I recd a letter from Loomis he sent the letter that you wrote to him last week was quite a lively week on Monday the 15th on Tuesday the 14th and Thursday the 17th and Friday the 20th Army Corps were reviewed by Genl Sherman Slocum and Howard on Saturday the fire Department turned out they are composed entirely of negroes and made a funny appearance to day the citizens are invited to see old Wheelers rival Kilpatric has a grand Cavalry review already we see signs of another campaign Augusta and Charleston are soon to fall no army has done as much as Billy Sherman the motto of the army is we trust in God and Billy Sherman Charley Penfield and Jerry are detailed for guards at Corps Head Quarters.
how do the people get along in Cromwell I hope to be able to get home by the 1st of August 1865 have you ever got my bosom pin of Cousin Minnie yet hoping this finds you well I will close with love to all
