Dear Parents
Thinking you would like to hear from me I will try to write a few lines we left Atlanta Nov 15th and have come the whole distance living on the country we come through we passed through several towns and captured the capital of the state destroying all public property cotton gins rice plantations we had a plenty till we come here all we have is rice to live on and the army is nearly starved we have traveld three hundred miles through the enemys country which is more than any other general ever done with no rear what the people will do is more than I can say
we have the enemy in rather of a tight place their force is fifteen thousand in front of us with some gun boats to help them it is a verry swampy country down here had it not been we would have charged the enemy I dont know any thing what is going on outside of rebeldom we got the news of Abes election from rebel newspapers I am sorry to hear that Frank is so low and if it was in my power I would come home but it is not I recd a letter from Loomis he was well Nov 2nd I am sorry that you are so poorly situated for the winter but hope for the best I could write a good deal about our trip but reserve it for some future time
Hoping soon to hear I will close with love to all Your Affect Son
