George S. Palmer to Elliot Palmer, 2 August 1863
Washington August 2nd 1863

Dear Father
Having some time to spare I improve the opportunity of answering Mothers short letter but as she has probaly skedadled to New Haven I will write to you hoping you will answer it for I have been out almost a year (it wants but ten days since my enlistment) and during all that time you have not wrote a whole letter to me I believe you wrote part of a letter and Mother filled up the rest you would feel as if I did not do right if I did follow your example if it was not for mother I am afraid you would forget that you ever had any boys in the army but I dont want to reprimand you for I suppose you have a good deal to do but during the year you might write at least one letter to each of your boys I am glad you get along so well with farming also that / your health is good we have verry heavy thunder showers almost evry day I have not heard from Frank or Loomis in some time there is quite a posse of Cavalry come in from the front after a fresh lot of horses they say the army is all tired out. to morrow they commence to draft in the district of Columbia six hundred are to be drafted in this city there is not much news at present hoping to hear from you soon I will close Remember me to all

Your Affect Son
