Dear Parents
                        Your welcome letter I have just recd and I hasten to answer it before the mail leaves for the north there is not much news except that we have been under marching orders for nearly two weeks destination supposed to be at the front Ed Black was down here from [?] to see me he is in good health George Sage also was here he is at Tullahoma at Div Head Quarters ambulance train I am on permanent picket with Chas Penfield we keep bachelors Hall together we have better quarters than any other of Co D boys and in fact always have Charley Wilcox and Frank Winkle were down to our shebang (Tennessee phrase for quarters / to see us from Charley Ed Black I learnt that three young ladies were making sport of Geo Sages letters (addmitting that he has a soft spot somewhere in his cranium or brain) I dont think Miss Hubbard acts the part of a lady by reading her love letters to Maggie Conniff and Suray Butter if she dont want him why dont she say so dont mention it to any one my hours on duty are from one to three P.M. and the same in the A.M. so you see that I am on evry day I hope you will send that likeness that I spoke of as I wish to return it to the original Loomis did not have much to do I dont thank any one for saying that I verry wild and that my parent couldn't do any thing with me it has been written to me in two different letters and they said that L told / it I hope it is not so you not write it to as I shall ask him about it when I write to him we have had verry rainy weather for the past week the veterans are returning quite fast they foot it from Nashville the military authorities will not permit them to stay long enough to get transportation at that city they have the small pox to a fearful extent of course it would not be safe for them to remain long there the 5th Conn have returned the boys have spent all their bounty money and have in many cases taken all they had saved up for the past three years hoping this will find you in good health I will close remember me to enquiring friends, dont forget to get the stars I spoke of
