Camp in Loudon valley Virginia
Dear Parents
I have not heard from you for some time but I will write a few lines to you we have just clubed together and got a ½ bush of potatoes Penfield cooked them it was the best meal I have ate for a good while the boys I will give a history of them Jerry is fat as a hog James Conniff is about the same you did not know him I believe Penfield is fat. C. Hubard does no duty yet on account of his arm Ed Black is fat enough for beef over ten barrels came to Portland boys we had not so much as an apple we dont care if Cromwell folks cant send us any we can get along without we dont think much of the Portland crowd our officers we like them verry much especialy 2nd Lieut Cambell Orderly Henry S Geer we cant think much of dont speak of it to any one we feel / very contented in our little shanty the Little Tom Thumb we couldnt get along without verry well you ought to see us souped up in our crib Jerry wants his pistol sent to him also with one hundred cartriges has his box been sent yet if it has you can send me one not verry large and put just what you are a mind to one thing I would like a pair of buck skin gloves that come up pretty well on the arm or wrist you can pay the freight send it by Adams Express the way to send it is George S Palmer Company D 20th Regiment Conn Vols Harpers Ferry Va Care of Capt F. A. Parker in the corner the expense wont be much I will send the money to pay you as soon as I get it which I hope will be before long I am out of postage stamps paper and so forth we get one months pay when we get it if you send one make the box as good and substantial as you can if you send one send a letter telling me when you / put it in they come through in four days. how is Charles Lyman folks he hasnt heard from them in five or six weeks all the boys are well as far as I know Robert Allison is well and fat as a pig how are the Cromwell people young ladies and all we hear that Parson Clark has received a call from the people to request him to leave the 24th had quite a time before leaving C T Hubard James Conniff Jerry Hubbard Charlie Wilson each have a box to be sent and cant George have one two you may think how hard it would be for you to be on picket twice or three times a week holding a gun for twenty four hours without any thing on your poor hands tobaco is ten cents a paper I have never seen the tobaco you sent yet I will now close
