Dear Parents
I have at last reached my regiment almost 2,000 miles from home found the Regiment much smaller that it was when I left it in January we are doing Provost duty here but we expect to go to the front at any moment we are 125 miles from Nashville 40 from the late battle ground in the same town where one year ago Jeff Davis said that the rebel rag would wave over the whole South in less than a year we had 27 rebels to guard night before last one of them Capt Gurley killed Genl Robert M Cook you will probaly remember the circumstance Genl Hooker is fighting with the 11th and one Division of our Corps 70 prisoners have just come in they say that Joe is giving them hail Columbia Jerry Hubbard is in the hospital at [?] we had a verry long and tiresome / journey to get out here I begin to miss my friends in Washington I am out of money and feel lonesome it dont seem like Virginia down here I wish you would write soon and I will close wishing to be rememberd to all hoping this will find you in good health I close
