Camp Berry Sept 1 1861
I believe I wrote in my last that we were ordered off on Friday last but that I tho't we should not go till Monday. our orders are to start Tuesday, but we are only going to Fort Sherman on Long Island New York. When we get there I will write again and let you know how we like and how we get along &c
I also wrote that our company was to be lettered B which proved to be the case tho' I saw the Ballot had it Company D. the officers are nearly the same as they were in that paper except that one of our Sergeants was transferred to another company and one of the corporals promoted and George Giddings was appointed Corporal—
We are getting along pretty well tho' some of the boys complain a little about their carrying their knapsacks and some a great many are complaining today about their rations / which are not very plentiful nor very good just now but we live in hope of the good time coming—
I think you will hardly have time to write so that a letter will reach me in time for me to get it before we leave but I will write as soon as we get settled in the fort—
I wrote to Poole when I was at home and since I got back I have received a letter from him. he is doing well tho' he says he dont know but he shall have to enlist by and by. he didn't say but what his folks were well and so I suppose they are so; he says Wm Schumann has gone out west.
Give my respects to all the folks and tell those that want to see us off to come to Concord Monday next (tomorrow)
Yours &c John W Clement
