John W. Clement to Unknown, 18 October 1861
Annapolis Md. Oct. 18. 1861

Yours of the 3d inst was recd on the 5th I believe and was glad to get it as I have recd but one letter besides those you have written and that I got day before yesterday, it was from George Eaton and I shall answer it as soon as possible but those I have written to and have not got answers from will have to wait till I do get answers and perhaps some time after. if any of them had ever lived in camp they would know what a luxury a letter or paper is and I think they would be more prompt. I have also recd one paper from Charles Grant and two from Ephraim Fellowes for which I am much obliged tell them to keep doing so.

Saml Caban told me yesterday that he had recd a letter and that you wanted me to write; I should have written several days ago but had no convenient opportunity and am glad I did not as last night we had orders to hold ourselves in readiness to embark, and the companies have the order now to pack up; where we are going I do not know but suppose down the coast, it may be anywhere from North Carolina to Texas. we are going in steamers and are going to take 30 days rations, and water at the rate of 1 gallon a day for a man and three for a horse. I hear we are to have our own tents which is good news if true. I hope we shall give a good account of ourselves wherever we go. Direct as before to Washington J W Clement

10 minutes of 11 shall write more if I have time
