John W. Clement to John Clement, 24 January 1862
Hilton Head Jan 24
Dear Father, I send by Mr Isaac W. March, a discharged soldier from our Company, a cypress stick cut on this island near "Fort Mitchell": which you can if you choose make a cane of.
I thought by peeling off the outside bark and varnishing it, it would make a neat cane. You will see that it is rather long but you can cut it off the right length, and put on a top and ferrule.
If you don't want it for your own use you can give the stick to George Eaton and let him make a cane of it.
Mr March will give the stick to Benj. Moulton to carry to Exeter, as he lives in Danville. Yours, J W Clement
