John W. Clement to John Clement, 31 July 1862
Graham's Plantation,
Hilton Head, July 31. 1862

Yours of the 20th & 23d inst I recd yesterday and was glad to hear from you but sorry to hear that you had all been sick and hope you have all recovered before this time.

There is no news here except that Lieut Ayer has returned and Hebberd has got his discharge and will probably go home in the same steamer that carries the mail that will probably take this letter.

Lieut Ayer came upon us very suddenly yesterday just before dinner. he also went of as suddenly as he came, some time in the afternoon, suppose he has gone down to the Fort. He bro't papers of the 26th some of them gave an account of the battle between the Rebel gunboat Arkansas and Farragut's Fleet / I hope they have destroyed the Arkansas before now, and that Gen. Pope has got to work as he seems to be one of the few live Generals we have.

We are not discouraged in the least by the result of the battle on James' Island, as we understood at the time that we had not the least show to win, and that we were led into a trap from which those who were lucky escaped; still we think that with any kind of a fair show we can whip the Rebs.

I am glad you have got my bundle and hope by this time you have got my watch.

Some time since you asked me the names of the islands in this vicinity. Those that I know of on the Georgia side of the Savannah River are Fig, Wilmington, Tybee, Little Tybee, Cockspur, (Fort Pulaski) Jones, Bird and Elba, on the South Carolina coast are Daufuskie, Savage, Bull, Pinckney, Hilton Head, St Phillips, St Helena, Port Royal, Otter, Edisto, Wadmalaw, Kiawah, Bulls, St Johns, and James are all I can think of just now

The Exeter boys are about in the same state of health as when I last wrote, and send their respects to friends.

Direct as before
John W Clement
