Nathan Augustus Monroe Dudley was born on August 20, 1825, in Lexington, Massachusetts. He married Elizabeth G. Jewett in Roxbury, Massachusetts, on November 12, 1845, and their son Granville was born around 1848. He worked as a tailor in Roxbury. He eventually joined the United States army, and when the Civil War began, he was serving in the 10th United States Infantry. He eventually received a commission as a colonel in the 30th Massachusetts Infantry, and he became a brevet brigadier general on January 19, 1865.
He returned to the Regular Army after the war, eventually becoming lieutenant colonel of the 9th United States Cavalry and then colonel of the 3rd United States Cavalry. He spent much of his military career stationed along the country’s western frontier. His wife died around 1899, and by 1900, he was living in Boston, Massachusetts. He died in Roxbury on April 29, 1910.
