William P. Peterman
William P. Peterman was born in April 1838 in Crawford County, Ohio, to Jacob and Mary Ann Peterman. His father was a farmer. He grew up and attended school in Liberty, Ohio, and he moved to Hawleyville, Iowa, sometime in the 1850s.

Peterman enlisted in the Union army on August 2, 1862, and he mustered in as a corporal in Company F of the 23rd Iowa Infantry on August 29. The regiment took part in the Siege of Vicksburg. He was wounded at Black River Bridge, Mississippi, on May 17, 1863, but he eventually recovered and rejoined the regiment. He was promoted to sergeant on June 30, 1863, and he mustered out on July 26, 1865.

He returned to Iowa after the war, and he married Margaret Kelly around 1865. He worked as a farmer, and by 1870, he owned $1,200 of real estate and $661 of personal property. By 1885, he was working as a carpenter in Bedford, Iowa. He applied for a federal pension in August 1886 and eventually secured one. Margaret died on October 11, 1904, and he married Sarah Westwood on October 18, 1905. He remained in Bedford for the rest of his life, and he died there on July 31, 1920.
