John W. Clement Biography, undated
John Wesley Clement.
in 1826.
Born around 1830.

Lived on a farm in Exeter, N.H. with parents and brother and sister. Attended Phillips Exeter Academy. Went to California in '49, was not a success at gold mining, his only reward a large gold ring made of a nugget.

He went through the Civil War, and on his return married Ann Fellowes, widow of his friend Ephraim Fellowes, who had two small children, Ella & Fred (my father.) He lived a very quiet life, was a devoted father to the two stepchildren, and was known as the gentlest and kindest of men. He died around 1901, and his wife died in 1922. The farm house is / now in the center of town at Exeter, and is our family home. It is quite a perfect example of a colonial farmhouse, with hand carved wooden beams and walls, and 6 fireplaces.

The letters are in such good condition because they were kept carefully locked up in an old secretary, and just brought out on special occasions.
