Friend R. McMahon to Martha E. McMahon, 14 March 1862
Crockett Houston Co Texas
March the 14th 1862
My Beloved Bettie I seat myself upon the ground and place my paper upon my saddle bags to let you know that I am well & all of the boys are tolerable well We have just got to the town of Crockett & camped it is a right pretty little place but I have not seen any country since I left as good as Newton, the water is generally bad though we have good water to night. we will get to the camp tomorrow by twelve if nothing happens We had a bad time of it last
over— /
night we camped 23 miles from this place, in a level flat country and as luck would have it I had to stand guard and of all the rains I ever saw I think it was the hardest & of all the times I think they were the longest two hours seemed to be two days but eventually I was relieved to my great joy the boys get along fine. some of our officers have strong symptoms of the big head Josh Mattox Zeke Cobb & Tom track for instance they think themselves far superior to Beauregard or Johnson, but there is one good thing they have nothing to do with me I would not be a sergeant or corporal for $5.00 per day they are the dogs of a Company
I do not know whether I will try to get a discharge or not. we have news here that Price & McCollough have whipped the yankees out of M.O. clean but I do not know whether it can be relied upon or not. we have a great deal of fun out of the boys on the road by circulating false reports in regard to the war sometimes they are willing to fight any and all of the federal army & again they seem to despair I wrote a letter to you yesterday which you will be apt to receive before this we pass our time off very well but I can tell you I think of home some times. the boys generally are very civil in our Company, but take care for the Jasper Company, & one from Tyler / I still think we will go to M.O. although I do not know yet when it will go there is so much excitement I can not write all I wish to and as I wish to but hoping times will get better I close for the present write to me immediately write all about every thing give my respects to all
I am untill death your best
