James Caten to Sarah Caten and Matilda Caten, 14 December 1862
Camp Abercrombie Dec 14/62

Dear sister and mother
I now take my pen in hand to answer your letter which I received on the 13th and it gave me great pleasure to hear that you were all well I am a great deal better now than I was when I wrote to you last I can walk around now with ease and I am getting quite smart I got that box that you sent to me and it came just in time I got it the night that I mailed the last letter and just after I mailed it and I was very sick at the time I got and I could not eat anny of the rough vitels that we had in camp / and the things that you sent me did me good as I was quite weak at the time but I grew strong ameadiately so that I am quite smart now but my leg has not got well yet nor is it likely to but I have not got my discharge yet and I do not know when I will get it either so it is not likely that I will be to home at christmas or new years and probaly not either this winter the doctor wanted to operate on my leg and take out some little bone he said was in it and it never would get well untill he did so but he is not a good doctor so I would not let him do it you must send me some postage stamps as I had to borrow one to mail this letter with they are 10 cents a piece down here I will be quite glad when I get those papers as I be very lonesome in my tent as I cannot get out with / the boys and I am laying there in my tent over half the time but it is getting late and I must close this letter give my love to all the boys and girls and I wish you all a happy christmas and Merry New year no more at pressent
from your Son and Brother
