Dear Mother and sister
                                                yours of of the 22 inst was duly read by me while laying in portsmouth waiting for transports to leave where we are going I cannot tell now while I am writing this note the men are loading the baggage on the boat and before one half hour we will be steaming down the river probaly towards charleston so you see from that that you must expect a short note this time merely to let you know that I read yours I am well at pressent and was / glad to hear that you were enjoying the same blessing at home sister you may take the money I sent home a few days ago I will make you a pressent of it give my love to Uncle Henry and Wm and tell them I would like to be at home to see them you can write your letters the same as usual only direct to Fortress Monroe Va. 169 Regt Co. D. N.Y.S.Vols and they will follow the Regt wherever we go in your next enclose a few postage stamps and I will be thankfull for them No more at pressent from your son and brother James Caton   Write soon and receive the thanks of James Caton
