October the 25 1861
 
My dear Mother i sit down this morning to let you know that i am well and all the rest of the boys we left camp [?] on the 24 and arived at camp nevin on the 25th 52 miles from louisville we left pittsburgh on last friday a week and we have been on the road ever sense we are a long the louis ville railroad they are some 20 thousand union troops here this is a very nice country a round here as far as i have seen i think i will see more / ove the country to day i and all the rest of our company has to go out on picket gard a bout six miles i think again i write a gain i can give you a better discription ove the country we had our bully hard crackers this smorning i like camp life very well so far i have lots of fun in our bunk they louisville men used us very well the second day we laid their comeing out to camp nevin we came out on the cars we had some very ugly trusel work to cross on our way we went through a tunnel a thousand yards long / they was some ove us on deck and i was prety near gone up a gain i got through for the smoke was so thick i have to go on gard so i shall stop for this time i want you to write as soon as you can and tell all the rest of the folks to write to i have a very poor plase to write that you all know tell the folks that i will write to them as soon as i can get time i hope you are all well a round their give my best respets to the folks. this is all at the presant time so write soon all ove you i think we will stop here some time now for they is lots ove cecessionist
