Camp Wood December the 18 1861
           
Dear Mother
                                    i sit down to day to write you a fiew lines to leave you know how i am getting a long i have been sick for two weeks and prety bad but i feel very well now only i am very weak i can walk out a round some now i think i will be able to cary my load and march in a week with the rest of the boys we have mooved twice sense i wrote to you the first moove was 16 miles and the seckond 8 miles i was sent on the cars we are now camped with in 1 mile of green river we have to get / our water from green river they was a battle at green river the other day we wasent in it but our regiment was formed into line of battle for to go to the river when the fiering seased the 32 Indianna regiment was over the river acting as pickets when the rebles came in on them and then the fight began they was only 4 hundred ove our men engaged in the fight they was 4 thousend rebles again our men our men fought well our artilery opened on them we lost 11 killed and 20 wounded it is reported that the rebles had 50 killed and the wound not noing the rebles fled fast they is 6 thousend ove our troops / a cros green river now i think we will go over in a fiew days i hope theas fiew lines may find you all injoying good health this is all at presant write soon as possible am getting a long i have been sick for two weeks and prety bad but i feel very well now only i am very weak i can walk it a round some now i think will be able to cary my
