My Affectionate Mother
I take my seat in my little cotton tent to answer your welcome letter whitch i received on yesterday and was hapy to hear ove you all enjoying good health i am well at presant and getting a long midleing well i am allmost a shamed to tell you we are on this side of green river yet and no sine of leaveing a tall it tant the privets falt for if they would turn us loose we would soon see / bolling green and set them on flight and keep on down south just so. you allways are wanting to know how we spend our sabeth some days we have inspection of arms and our clothes that takes up most of the day and some times we are out on picket we hant had church more than four times sense we come to kentuckey we have a great time down here it is very dissagreeable weather here and has been for some time back i dont know wheth the long roll beat on the 25 and we was soon in line of battle and was marched over green river / a bout three miles and was stationed in the woods and two regiments was sent down to cave citty to start the fight and then retreat back to where we was and then take a stand but they rebles wouldent come out our boys was all very anxious to try their spunk on the rebles. i am a fraid this war ant going to be over for three years i ant in fun a bout this i think we have a good chance to see into matters here they is stil a good quantity ove our boys sick yet we cant turn out more than 300 men on dressperade and when we left home / we had one thousend men they is two ove our men gone home to recruit more men the rail road is one mile from our camp as i hant time to write any more i will close this poor writting hopeing to hear from you soon
