May the 9th 1862        
Pulaski Tennessee
           
Dear Mother
                   I take the pleasant oportunity ove writing you a fiew lines to leave you know how i am and where i am we are now in pulaski tennessee i am well we are quartered in the court house our company only
 
May the 1st we struck tents at 8 oclock and took up the line of march and we passed a very nice little town called spring hill the first day and camped 12 miles south of franklin for the night and left the next morning a gain we reached Columbia at 12 oclock and then mooved on 5 miles south of the town where we halted for the night and their we cott up to a train of wagons whitch had to stop for fear ove Captain Morgan and his band for he took some 150 prisoners of our men as they was passing through pulaski and toock a train of wagons and burnt them right be fore our mens eyes they was four companeys of the 79 regiment of P.V. sent down to pulaski for reinforcements and some cavelry when they got in Morgan and his band had left the town but was stil in sight but soon left for good Morgan killed four ove our men / our men belonged to General Mitchells division they was sick men going on to their regiments and they 150 men had only 23 guns with them but our men killed 8 of them before they was taking they was all left off by taking the oath of of honer to not take up arms a gainst them til they would be exchanged for other prisoners we was four days on the march and the last day i never saw sutch a rain it was a continual rain the hole day when we got in the town the other troops had the old stars and stripes floating on the capitol and had cleaned out all the stores that was ove any account and had their hoarses tied on the pavement and the square that is a round the court house was full of hoarses it loocked hard they had orders to burn the town when ever they got in to it but they got a dispatch to not burn it it gust when the was in the edge of town so they are gone back to Columbia to their old post we have taking some prisoners sense we came here when they got in here they was 2 dead men lying on the street ove our men we have a good deal of duty to do they ant / one union man in the town i think we will leave this soon a gain one days march will take us into alabama
 
we had a great time foarding duck river on our march that is betwheen Columbia and franklin Will Huff is well a gain and with they company i got all the money that you sent to me and was glad to get it the boys are all in good health and anxious to go to alabama as i hant mutch to write this time i will close hoping to hear from you soon yours truly
