Sept the 6 1862
 
Dear Mother
                        I seat my self this pleasant morning to answer your kind and welcome letter whitch i received on yesterday and indeed i was glad to hear ove you all being in good health i was sory to hear ove your eyes being so sore i hope by the time this letter reaches you they will be better my health hant been very good for some time but i am getting better in fact i hant been sick i was wore out with hard duty we have retreated back to Nashville we left Columbia on the 1 of Sept at 4 oclock in the morning with out any breakfast and traveled fifteen mile before / stoping we then halted for a fiew dry crackers and started on our way a gain we hadent left Columbia 5 hours til the rebles was in it we had to march very hard when we arived at nashville the men was very mutch fatigued i saw some of them take their coffee and crackers and set down to eat and the coffee was to hot to drink right off and they fel a sleep by the side of it and lay their till morning with their grub by their side we are now on a bout quarter rashions in fact our grub is cart of from us i tell you we are in a pretty tight place at presant General Buells hole force is retreating back here and the rebles after him they are off to the left from us but they are all coming here 
 
you say walt likes soldering i must say that he hant traveled 25 miles a day on dry crackers the army of the Potomack fairs a good deal better than our army our army is very mutch dishearted on account of retreating and no grub the rebles has tore up a good deal of the railroad betwheen this and Louisville i am a fraid the mail will be taking and they is a large reble force within 10 mile of Sincinatti they are in be hind us and i might say all a round us we are expecting a battle here evry day they sent in a flag of truce to us to serrender the town in three days we are stil here yet and i think we will stay here til we are whiped a way 
 
i wont write mutch this time for fear the mail will be captured i am sory for them folks that will be drafted the boys here are all well John Boyle is with the company give my best respects to all the folks i know tell alie to write to me right off for i like to hear from you and i cant write here like you can their this is all at presant write soon and give me all the perticulars
