July the 26th 1863
Dear Mother
I seat my self to write you a fiew lines to answer your kind letter whitch i received a fiew minuets a go and was glad to hear ove you all being well i have got well a gain i will now tell you the reason i did not write i was left behind in and old house in fact i couldent write but after i was brought in to town i wrote to alie i saw in your letter before i read all ove it that alie had got my letter i received that money you sent me and the stamps our regt was paid on yesterday Mr Huff is here but he intends going home on tomorow he had intended staying two / months with us but George Huff and Hall Huff is both drafted and he has to go home to cary on the works if you hant sent any more money to me before this reaches you dont send it for i intend sending home forty dolars and if i dont send it with Huff i will send it by mail and if i send it with him i will write to you so you can go and get it did you ever get an over coat from George Huff for me i sent one in a box to Freeport with some other boys if you dident you get it when you go over the next time. you wanted to know all a bout my sickness and who was left to take care of us this may loock hard to you but they was no person except a quack doctor whitch was no better than no person evry man had to tend to his self the man that died his name was William Green / a member of Co K he was from Kittanning i have wrote to you several letters sense i came back to the regt so i wont say any thing more on this subgect as i think i will see the day that i can tell you this by the word of mouth it was very hard usage but we have got used to it in fact we never expect any attendance except we are in a regular hospital and their they are used better but it ant like home at the best i supose you will want to know what was the matter with me well i cant hardly tell you the doctor sayd he thought it would turn to the smaulpox but it did not i was pretty bad for a fiew days but i am all right a gain Mr Huff is very well pleased with the army here i hant had a chance to have a good talk with him but i will do you good to go and see him when he gets home he can tell you things / a bout the army that will please you. i will tell you one thing that i never told you before at the battle of stones river on the last days fight while on the last charge we made a reble shell busted handy me hiting in a fence knocked a piece of rail a ganst my leg knocking it perfectly numb so as to stop me from running for a nower or so i supose the squire Huff will be telling you a bout it so you wont be ignorant of this i gest mearly mention it for that i got the list of drafted that John sent me it will do very well do you think Ban will pay three hundred dolars to get clear. well mother i will send $40 dolars with mister Huff in a letter and you can go to Freeport and get it he will be home by the last of this month you get it
