Dear Mother
                I seat my self this beautiful Sabbath day to answer your kind and welcome letter of the 12th as i have not had time to answer it any sooner i was hapy to hear ove you enjoying good health my health is good you say you saw my captain i was glad you did for he could tell you all a bout me but i would ove liked if it had been my self in place of the captain but i supose it done as well as if it had been me we are stil at this old place [faded] but the rebles are stil in our front as thick as ever they is some diserters coming in evry day and they report that they are [faded] /
 
...or not. and tell me if your cropp was good this year and let me know what the three month malitia thought of soldering when they was out it is thought here that General Lee has command of the reble force in our front now but wheather / it is so or not i cant tell we are stil fortifying here and if they take this place by fighting they will be a great many of them wont enjoy their trip very well they may out flank us but that is the only way they can we are stil on half rashions but we stil live in hopes that we will soon get better it is hard i will admit but we cant expect every thing to go right you say the weather their is nice and pleasant i must say the weather here is very cold at nights and tolerable warm during the day well mother as i hant mutch to write i will close hoping to hear from you soon this leaves me well and the rest of the boys from a round their
