Dear Mother
                      It is with pleasure that i seat my self this night in my little tent with my mess mates to answer your kind and welcome letter whitch i received this evening and was hapy to hear ove you all enjoying good health i am hapy to say that my health is good we are now encamped on lookout mountain and we are working evry day on the fortifications and i am sory to tell you we are getting no more rashions than when i rote to you last and in fact i cant see how it is to get better for we have so many troops here i must tell you we are pretty hard up but it ant as bad as you hurd in freeport but it is bad a nough it is hard that a man cant get a nough to eat but i loocked for some of / this kind of usage before i left home i cant see how we are to get a nough suplies a head here to make an advance on the rebs i ant writing this as a complaint it is gest to tell how we are getting a long. i received a letter from Kate Kennedy a fiew days a go and her Brother David died in the hospital on the patomack i was sory to hear of it i hear that Adda ulam is maried to Dick Canghorn. we have been paid ove late and i think i will send home 50 dolars in this letter and it is rather more than i can spare but a 50 dolar bill will be mutch better to send in a letter than smaul bills i may have to send for some but i will send 50 in this letter i received them five dolars you sent me and them socks and gloves and am very thankful to you for them and i also received them socks this evening that ant mary sent me give ant my love and tell her them socks was thankfully received /
i am glad to hear that your crops was good this year i would like to be their with you this cristmas and have a good diner but i guess i will make my cristmas diner on three little hard crackers but i hope it will soon get better and the sooner the better. the last victory here was a big thing i will now close for the want of something to write write soon and i will do the same
