in the Field June 3d Georgia 1864
Dear mother as i am stil a live i thought i had better let you know it as i know you would be uneasy a bout me we was in a nother battle on the 27th and lossed 50 men out our regt killed and wounded and prisoners taken our company had four men wounded [faded] they was only two regts ove our brigade engaged on the 27th we used the rebles up very bad but lost heavy ourselves they charged on our two regts but we stoped them we have been skirmishing with them ever sense our regt has lossed 7 men sense the 27th skirmishing with them they are fortifyed and we are now on a stand til the wings gets in position Hoocker is on our left he had some hard fighting on yesterday evening and from what i can learn he drove them some they are in a mountainous country and have evry advantage ove us they has been very hard fighting on most all parts ove the line but at different times
we have been on the march over a month and fighting togather and the men are wore out but it seems as if it wasent near over yet we are expecting a heavy battle evry day gest as soon as all our army gets in position it will open we have been on the scirmish line ever sense the 27th til last night we was sent back a fiew rodd to rest and make a cup ove coffee and so we expect to return to the line evry hour our loss in killed and wounded sense we started on this campaign is estimated at ten thousand Dan Shearer was left on the mountain with some sick John Boile Frank Mitchell Johns Reed and Huffs two boys are all well i will close this hoping that i will get through safe to give you the perticulars write soon for i cant write only by times dont be oneasy a bout me for i will do the best i can they was a heavy storm on yesterday and a nother storm coming up now i expect to put in a hard night goodby write soon Abram Kipp
