Dear mother
                 I seat my self to answer your kind letter of the 6th and also yours ove the 30th and was glad to hear ove you all being well my health is good the reason i did not get your letters sooner was the road was cut betwheen this and nashville but it is in running order a gain i received them 5 dolars you sent me well mother our old general has taking Atalanta and a bout 7 thousand prisoners and a good deal of artilery and made them blow up a good many trains of ammunition i have been to attalanta and it is a large place it covers / as mutch ground as Pittsburgh but it is awfuly tore up by our shells the town is full of caves where the sitizens stayed while we shelled it the troops are in the best of spirits the army has stoped til they get paid and get some clothing i think they will pull out in the coars of 30 days a gain they all have great confidence in General Sherman i saw some ove the county men on their way to the front the other day i think a fiew months survice will take the rose of ove their cheeks you wouldent believe the difference they is in them and the old soldiers the old soldiers says calls them them Bounty gumpers i see by your letter that Walter was exempt i think he had better content him self now at work i supose they are raising money in our township to pay volenteers if they are i would say for you to not pay one / sent leave the draft take its way i supose they is great many ove the people are down on General Grant because he hasent taken richmond before this i am stil confident he will take it no dout it is a big gob i supose politicks is all the go up their now i think if they was as little interested in it at home as they are in the army they wouldent make sutch a fuss the men in the field are for fighting it out and not call for peace til they come in on our terms and for old abe the soldiers are going heavy for him they say he has done for four years and will do four more so i say no peace for me unless an honerable peace and that is out ove the question at the presant time i will close hoping to hear from you soon i will be at home by the 12th of October if i keep my health
