Memphis Tenn Sept 19th 1862
           
Dear Mother
                        I received your letter to day and was verry much pleased to hear from you I wrote to yesterday a day before and I will not write much this time last night we was called up twice we thought we was attacted but the enemy did not come we are called out now about every night you kneed not be surprised if you hear of us having a little fight before long these things arived here safe I want you to send my over coat down if I do not get it I will have to draw / a new one and it will cost eight dollars you can me that when you can I received the cake you sent and to day I had it in the box and some of the stole may be some of the boys done it for fun if they have I will get it again. we are trying hard to get into the fort. when you send my over coat I want M A to bake me a cake and send or send aney thing elce the boys are all well to day is saturday I guess I will have to go on guard to morrow no more this time I received a letter from Father to day Ed is well as well as him self if we should happen to get / into the Fort I am going to send for my violin because if we get thare I know we will have to stay a while I am fat as a pig and a little more so my love to all inquireing friends from your son John Beach
